How Aruba Networks delivers to complex health care systems
Hospitals across the U.S. have complex IT infrastructure, complete with communications systems that must support a variety of functions. As more institutions merge and shift, these communications tools become even more complicated to support, manage and migrate. Emerging technology related to the Internet of Things and other major trends have also introduced considerable obstacles for health care connections. Aruba Networks is creating solutions that will help complex health care systems adapt to future needs and facilitate user expectations.
Developed with IoT in mind
The IoT is becoming a very real option for hospital connections, but delivering and maintaining these devices and data can be challenging. Aruba co-founder Keerti Molkote noted that every solution they create is being made with IoT in mind, CRN reported. In the future, hospitals might be able to use Aruba ClearPass, which provides secure access and device profiling for medical devices. Patients can also be automatically checked in through Bluetooth location services, which will provide a variety of information and improve the overall experience. These capabilities will be essential to better serving patient, guest and doctor needs while implementing new technology.

Serving gigabit wireless
Aruba has also gone to great lengths to enable 100 percent availability by distributing device loads and access points, enabling minimal to zero downtime. The organization recently deployed its gigabit wireless network at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital to bolster its infrastructure. The full 802.11ac Wave 2 network was established to anticipate future IoT device and location service needs while supporting the merged hospitals and provide better network connectivity to users.
HIT Infrastructure noted that the main driver behind this move was to facilitate growing mobility requirements and IT infrastructure initiatives. With Aruba’s services, the hospital can deliver better speed to efficiently use mobile equipment like IV pumps, clocks and ultrasound devices to send and receive data.
“Patients could use mobile technology as a wayfinder to guide them to their destination.”
Showing the way
For any patient or guest, approaching a hospital can seem like being lost in a foreign land. Hospitals are crowded and unfamiliar, and navigation can be difficult with complex interconnections and signage. Rather than causing patients, guests or doctors undue stress, they could use mobile technology as a wayfinder to guide them to their destination. This will help improve hospital resource use and decrease the number of late or missed appointments.
In 2012, Boston Children’s Hospital implemented a Meridian-powered mobile app to help visitors navigate through its pathways across its six campuses. It allowed the institution to communicated to visitors and employees in a more interactive way. As more users leverage smartphones, this type of capability will be critical and could improve visitor experiences.
Hospital facilities are essential to patient care, but without the right communications and connectivity, it can make doctors jobs harder and impact visitor experience. Aruba Networks has already implemented necessary solutions in health care institutions to help visitors navigate through the building, provide 100 percent connection availability and support IoT devices.
